Government Affairs & Education Committee Update

IFSA's Government Affairs and Education Committee (GAEC) monitors global regulatory and legislative issues impacting the industry. Check out the latest updates below:

· Update on IFSA Food Safety Plan for Airline Catering: The IFSA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Working Group and others have aligned on a copy of the IFSA Food Safety Plan for Airline Catering, or the FSMA Compliance Tool. Feedback was received from various airline and catering Members. The next step is to present to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in late June. IFSA continues to work with FDA to reiterate the uniqueness of the airline catering industry and to develop a plan that can be a template for Members when developing their Food Safety Plans as well as used to train FDA inspectors on airline catering FSMA compliance.

· Yiannes Remarks on World Food Safety Day: On 7 June, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response Frank Yiannes recognized the first World Food Safety Day. Yiannes noted “food safety is an issue that transcends international boarders” and that the U.S. must strengthen our culture of food safety and do more to influence and change human behavior. FDA’s FSMA, the New Era of Smarter Food Safety initiative, and the Nutrition Innovation Strategy are all missions, Yiannes added, that were created to prevent foodborne illnesses, create a modern food safety system, and empower consumers to make more informed choices about their diet. IFSA looks forward to working with Yiannes and others at the FDA to improve food safety within the airline catering realm.

· FDA Updates FSMA Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): FDA updated its FAQ on FSMA to include questions and answers related to the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Product for Human Consumption (Produce Safety Rule) on 12 June. For additional questions, please contact FSMA Technical Assistance Network.

· FDA Rules ‘Added Sugar’ Not Needed for Single-Ingredient Sweeteners: FDA said on 18 June that single-ingredient containers of sugar, maple syrup, honey and other sweeteners would not be required to list “added sugars” on their nutrition facts label alongside “total sugars”. FDA clarified this change in their final guidance. FDA will still require single-ingredient sweeteners to list a percent Daily Value for added sugars, though the term “added sugars” will not need to be included in the label. IFSA staff does not believe this will affect members but will continue to monitor.

· EU Publishes Final Directive on Single-Use Plastics (SUP): The EU published the final SUP Directive in the EU Official Journal on 12 June. The Directive is available here. IFSA’s EU Task Force will be holding a call the week of 24 June to discuss the directive and IFSA’s position. IFSA legal counsel Covington & Burling put together an updated legal analysis of the Directive and potential impacts on IFSA Members. Please contact IFSA staff for more information and/or to join the EU Task Force distribution list.

IFSA will continue to monitor these issues, provide updates and guidance to its members.
