Government Affairs & Education Committee Update

IFSA's Government Affairs and Education Committee (GAEC) monitors global regulatory and legislative issues impacting the industry. Check out the latest updates below:

· African Swine Fever Impacting Local Pork Products in Asia & Africa: The African Swine Fever (ASF) is an animal health issue, causing a near 100 percent fatality rate in the pigs who are infected with the viral disease. Due to this ASF outbreak, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is prohibiting imports of fresh meat from ASF positive countries and the Customs and Border Patrol has enhanced their inspection frequency. IFSA staff will continue to monitor this issue and provide Members with timely updates.

· Trump Announces New China Tariffs; Exemption Process for List 3 Pending:On 13 May, the Trump Administration has announced their intention to introduce a fourth round of tariffs for Chinese products subject up to 25 percent duty, valued at $300 billion. With the previous tariff lists, if implemented, this fourth list would ensure virtually all imports from China would be subject to a tariff. A draft notice and proposed tariff list released by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) outlines products including food and agriculture. USTR is soliciting written comments on the newest list and a Section 301 hearing is scheduled for 17 June. As Section 301 List 3 tariffs went from a 10% to 25% duty on 6 May, an exclusion process will be introduced for those products in the near future. As tariffs are being addressed by several organizations with more direct impacts, IFSA recommends no action for members at this time.

· Groups Ask Congress to Advance Sodium Reduction Targets:Health advocates sent a letter to Senate and House Appropriators asking for a rider to be removed so the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can release sodium reduction targets. Additionally, they asked for an increase in FDA appropriations so the Agency can provide technical assistance to help schools further cut sodium in their meals and fund consumer awareness campaigns on Nutrition Facts Labeling and menu labeling education.

IFSA will continue to monitor these issues, provide updates and guidance to its members.
